AERONAUTICAL MAPS (scale 1:500 000)

The 1:500 000 aeronautical edition maps are essentially the same as the 1:500 000 topo-admin maps but with modifications for aeronautical purposes. The same topographical background is used except for the heights which are depicted in feet. Magisterial district information has been removed to reduce clutter. The latest aeronautical information is clearly depicted in a distinctive overprint of brilliant blue in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) requirements. The overprinted aeronautical information is updated on a regular basis whilst the background has the same revision cycle as the 1:500 000 topo-admin maps.

VFR AERONAUTICAL CHART OF THE SOUTH WESTERN CAPE region (scale 1:250 000)

An exciting new 1:250 000 scale Aeronautical chart providing a single sheet coverage of the South Western Cape has been published in March 2000. Pilots now have all the aeronautical information for VFR flying in this region. The map will be especially useful to helicopter pilots, all recreational aviation enthusiasts and small aircraft operators. All restricted air space, navigation beacons with frequencies, heliports, airports/airfields/landing strips, hang and paragliding and microlight strips are shown plus a host of other useful information. The aero data is overlaid on brand new topographical coverage of the area. The map coverage extends from Velddrift in the North to Pearly Beach in the South and Eastwards to include Worcester.

The information was gathered after extensive consultation with the aviation community in the region. Any input would be valued for future updates.

INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION ORGANISATION (ICAO) AERONAUTICAL CHARTS (scale 1:1 000 000)

South Africa is responsible for publishing and maintaining 16 sheets of this world-wide chart series, covering the southern part of Africa. This series has accurate but generalised base maps with only the most important topographical detail shown to enable the overprinted aeronautical information to be clearly legible. Each sheet covers an area of 4 degrees in latitude and 6 degrees in longitude with a north and east overlap of 15 minutes.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) prescribes the rules and regulations regarding aeronautical information shown on these charts such as navigational aids, air routes, etc
