MapPack

a project of the Chief Directorate: Surveys and Mapping

MapPack - FREE MAPS TO PROMOTE MAP LITERACY
Who is it for?
Staff and learners at all schools where geography is taught to Grade 12.  The MapPack Project aims to put the local topographic map sheet on the wall of every senior geography classroom in the country.  Out of an estimated target of 3 500 schools teaching geography to matric, we have reached about one third.
What is it?
An envelope containing maps and additional information to help with teaching the map use section of the geography syllabus.  Using information supplied by the school, the local 1:50 000 topographic map sheet is identified.  Subject to stock availability, five of these local map sheets are supplied in the MapPack.  In many cases this is the first time that teachers and learners see their local environment portrayed on a map in enough detail to identify familiar residential areas, roads, relief features and their own schools.
How to get it?
A MapPack is supplied FREE to all senior secondary schools teaching geography to Grade 12.  A request form will be supplied by the MapAware Project.  All relevant information must be supplied by the school.

FREE MAPS TO PROMOTE MAP LITERACY

MapAware MapPacks

As part of the MapAware project, the Chief Directorate: Surveys and Mapping is offering five free topographic map sheets to all secondary schools teaching geography to grade twelve.  Our aim is to put the local topographic map sheet on the wall of every South African senior secondary geography classroom.  The MapPack envelope contains 5 free local topographic map sheets and additional information for teachers and learners.  The envelope will be despatched free of charge to each qualifying school that responds to the offer giving the information required.  Only 1 MapPack per school.

There are 1 916 sheets in the South African topographic map.  We need to find the right sheet for your school and we want to establish a mailing list to inform you of what else we are doing to support education and promote map literacy.  Please give both addresses.  If your school does not have a street address please describe where your school is.  The envelope will include 2 copies of Mapping South Africa, a full colour brochure containing information about all the maps in the National Map Series and our other products.  These can be joined and displayed as a poster.  Indexes and information about how to order topographic maps, aerial photographs and orthophoto maps as well as a price list are included.  Your MapPack will be despatched subject to availability and on supply of the necessary information.  Fill in the application form below, which must be stamped and signed by the school principal or senior geography teacher, and post it to:
