The Chief Directorate of Surveys and Mapping (CD:S&M) is responsible for the official, definitive, national topographic mapping and control network system of South Africa.
The CD:S&M provides a range of maps, aerial photography, survey services and computer data products for government departments, commerce, planning, administrative, educational, management and leisure use.
The Chief Directorate: Surveys and Mapping(CDSM) entered the new millenium by opening a new, revamped foyer on the 10 January 2000. The Deputy Minister of Land Affairs, Dr Dirk du Toit did the opening of the foyer. The CDSM also took this opportunity to take leave of the outgoing Director-General, Goeff Budlender.
For us at the CDSM this occasion marked more than a mere face-lift of the building. It concretised the constant and ongoing drive of the CDSM towards excellence of service delivery and customer care. The spacious new foyer extends a friendly welcome to our clients. Map Sales has been moved from the basement to this entrance level to allow easy access to anybody in need of our maps and aerial photographs. The proximity of the cashier next to the sales counter enables clients to conduct all their business on the same floor and thus economise on their time. Apart from the hard copies of spatial information, the digital information is also available on the same floor, just a few meters down the passage. Another important aspect of this new, customer friendly environment, is the easy and direct access for physically challenged clients. In the past, Map Sales was in the basement, effectively restricting access for clients in wheel chairs. This is no longer the case.
South Africa places an important emphasis on the totality of its history. The new foyer encompasses this concept by exhibiting a variety of instruments reflecting the history of surveying and mapping in our country. Clients and visitors have free access to wander around this permanent exhibition. It is well worth a visit.
